Blogging has, almost since its inception, been a medium that encourages a certain levelling of social norms and preconceptions. Blogs on a whole are very different from the websites of old; they don’t cost a significant amount of money to maintain, they don’t require a heavy investment of time, and perhaps most importantly, they don’t require the blog creator to have an overwhelming amount of knowledge as to how to build a website. A fully functional blog can be set up within minutes on a free hosting blog website, something that is lightning-fast when compared to the tedious website building of old. As a result, blogs have become immensely popular among students, a demographic that has contributed a great deal to the popularity of blogs as a medium.

Student bloggers are ubiquitous, and the reason for that is quite obvious: they have the time, motivation, and energy, without the investment needed to use other, more expensive communication efforts. Blogging requires a great deal of time and research but not a great deal of initial financial investment, making them ideal candidates for blogging. Moreover, many students are actively engaged with one or two subjects that they feel quite strongly about, and blogging is an easy, effective, and accessible way for these students to have a communication outlet with which to express their beliefs and opinions about a formative subject. All of these factors combine to make students blogging a very real and effective phenomenon, and one that will most likely be a driving force in the blogosphere for quite a few years to come.
